There has always been a strong rivalry between car manufacturers who are all keen to claim the bragging rights of having the fastest car in production. Just like a big kid in a candy shop, the designers want everything they can lay their hands on in order to claim the prize and be able to boast of stratospheric top speeds. Here are some of the contenders of 2012.
Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
The first thing to say is that since the Ferrari F40 shattered the 200 miles per hour barrier some while ago, the bar just keeps getting higher and higher and with this in mind, the Bugatti Veyron lives up to its name with a claimed top speed of 267 miles per hour, although your partnership with this stunning car will be short lived if the cops catch you testing that claim! Boasting a whopping 1,200 horsepower and looking like a real life batmobile, this is a serious machine that will have you dreaming of being a F1 driver, the only drawback is the price tag, $2.4 Million , so for most us, we have to carry on dreaming.
Koenigsegg Agera R
Boasting an equally eye-popping 1,115 horsepower but costing $800,000 less at only $1.6 Million, this makes the Koenigsegg Agera a real bargain, especially as it has a top speed of 260 miles per hour as well! The Agera will accelerate to a crazy ban inducing speed way faster than you can pronounce the make and model, but here is the real clincher, if you take one of the slightly lesser models in the range other than the Agera R, the Koenigsegg’s can actually run on bio-ethanol so they could even be technically classed as “Green” but if you choose to buy the top of the range model, which if it was a film star , would probably be Dolph Lundgren on steroids, then you are probably unlikely to be worrying too much about greenhouse gases, shame on you!
Those men in white coats and a clipboard from across the pond have come up with a real winner here. Priced at $330,000; this vehicle smacks of good old British eccentricity with the engine sitting behind the driver. If you push the car to its limit of 650 horsepower and a top speed of 223 miles per hour, that is going to be some experience hearing the roar creeping up behind you!
Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
So you want a car that will exceed that magical 200 miles per hour barrier but only have about $115,000 to spend? Don’t bother getting chased out of the Ferrari dealership when you tell them how much you have to spend, just head straight to the Chevrolet dealership instead. The ZR1 ticks a lot of boxes and does not lack for tech and gadgets despite the measly price tag compared to some of the big boys it tries to hang around with. You get magnetic shock absorbers and the same carbon ceramic brakes that you get on a Ferrari FXX and some pretty neat handling in the deal too, so what’s not to like.
There are already some new models planned for 2013 that claim to surpass the present top speed record for a street legal car, so watch this space and get saving.
